A Q&A With Hampton's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

For the 68 Oak Collective, the focus extends beyond NIL opportunities. It centers on building a stronger future for Hampton University student-athletes. One that supports them academically, athletically, professionally, and personally.

Helping lead that vision is Anthony D. Henderson Sr., Hampton University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. An alumnus and former student-athlete, Henderson returned to his alma mater in 2023 with more than two decades of experience in athletic administration. Since his return, Hampton Athletics has seen growth in staffing, strategic planning, academic performance, and NIL development.

In this conversation, Henderson reflects on the power of alumni engagement and what it takes to elevate today’s student-athlete experience.

How Anthony D. Henderson Sr. is Reshaping the Student-Athlete Experience

Q: As someone who once played football at Hampton, what does it mean to now lead Hampton Athletics?

“Coming to Hampton changed my life. Now I have the opportunity to provide that same experience for student-athletes who are in the position I was in 25 or so years ago. I get to help give them a championship-level experience—it’s humbling.”

Q: How have NIL opportunities and alumni support changed the student-athlete experience?

“I benefited from alumni support when I was in school. We had alums who were really invested in the football program and wanted us to have the best so we could compete for championships. That support has just gone to another level now with NIL, revenue sharing, and the things we’re able to provide our student-athletes.”

Q: Why is donor and community support so important for Hampton Athletics right now?

As Hampton Athletics continues to evolve, support beyond tuition and traditional funding has become increasingly important. Through initiatives like the 68 Oak Collective, donor and community investment help provide additional resources for facilities, travel, and the overall student-athlete experience.

“Most people think tuition alone is enough to keep the lights on and provide what student-athletes need—but sometimes more is needed. From an athletics perspective, as we add facilities, make improvements, and increase our budget for travel just to compete for championships, those funds are necessary for us to get to the next level, especially in the conference we now compete in.”

Q: Did you ever imagine becoming Hampton’s Director of Athletics while you were a student-athlete?

“I would have never expected to have this job when I was here,” Henderson said. “I really didn’t know the business side of athletics existed.”

Now, he is continuing the story. Having experienced Hampton as a student-athlete himself, Henderson understands firsthand how impactful the university can be beyond athletics alone. That perspective continues to shape his leadership as Hampton navigates a new era of college sports.
